A combination of two ideas… one is that it is a container, its information within is contained there and its information is then scrutinized, absorbed, etc. The second idea is that same concept, only dealing with someone’s story or alibi, and all the information that can prove it is legit is plainer than Pinocchio’s nose when he lies. I suppose in a way, holding water all depends on how dirty the water is.
